Ditch Your Goals, Set This Instead

Setting goal has always been something we work towards. We set financial goals, academic goals, status goals and goals to lose 10kg by end of the year. We set all sort of goals, but the question always ends up with “How far am I away from the goal?”

Many of the times, we fail to reach our goal not because we fail to set achievable goals or stay determined in achieving them. But the fact that we are working them all wrong ! Recently I came across a section from James Clear’s book on Atomic Habits. He mentioned how in a race or game in the Olympics, all the competitors have one similar goal — To win and cross the finishing line first. But what differs the one from winning are the systems that he/she has in place.

This definitely make sense! The fact that systems are what truly determines our progress and results, not goals and never just the goals that gives us the results. Anyone, anywhere and anyhow can have a goal in mind. In fact any goals. But what changes it from just a goal to results are systems set in place, that brings goals to life.

The Problem With Goals

Goals are easy to set and we all know that everyone set goals. In school, we started learning the importance of goal settings. Our teachers taught us about setting academic goals and my parents taught me how to set financial goals at 16. And it’s also common for Asian family to set goals such as when to get married, when to have children, when to get my first property or what’s the minimum starting…
